Apparently "Power Calibration Error" can also mean "Not enough power available from usb port to calibrate the freakin laser beam". Power Calibration Error Roxio Speed 8x, time about 10 minutes. Would have to say that this is a masterstroke.

reply Yes there is... I was having this problem too. Only writes CDs (but reads anything you can possibly feed it). I am usually good about defraging the drive but here lately I haven't been so I defragged and it was 50 percent fragmented.

Oddly enough, this wasn't an issue with a single later dvd because I tried that and it burned fine.After Googling I saw one potential problem could be to heavily fragmented drive. Check your cable, it may be faulty.
