Deleted it, had to do a registry rebuild, then a cache clear, then it was OK. click site deleted the extra directory and it fixed. Sorry, that was unclear. so i just rejected the idea my symlink could be the cause of trouble. Invoking drush in a fresh Terminal session gave no error. OSX doesn't care about capitalization, but Drush/Drupal do. For example one copy is in /sites/default/modules and a different copy in /sites/all/modules .
