It won't do all encryption states, but it does more then what is included with DVD Shrink. The best DVD RW to read are the Benqs and the Plextors. How come Sour Cream can expire? The disc could be scratched or damaged, or it could've had copy protection against duplication written into it when it was burned. If and when DVD Decrypter finishes ripping then I'd mount the ISO with VirtualCloneDrive and then re-rip with AnyDVDHD because it happens to be very good at repairing structure damage- it's Dvd Shrink 3.2 Cyclic Redundancy If you're successful, the drive can be ruled out as the cause of the CRC error, leaving the disc as the culprit.

As far as dvd encryption goes, DVD decryptor is a great utility to just rip the video with minimal to no qualtiy loss. Steps 2 through 5 may be repeated as required to recover disc. You sure sound positive its "new" protections and "theres nothing you can do"! I'm in the process of writing an article about this, but school work is #1 priority.

After looking at it, the problems I'm having only happen on certain company DVD's. You should explore DVDFab's capabilities while it lasts. While as SNGX1275 suggests, DVD Decrypter is more potent than DVD Shink, it isn't the answer to issues with many recent discs, and some "failed to read" errors will also be Ive been backing up all the newest releases and haven't had more than 4 that needed anything beyond DVD decryptor to rip the more protected ones...
